Glazes
Ceramic Studio
We have a selection of glazes and underglazes that we have tested for use at our standard firing temps. Please feel free to use these for hobby and testing work. If you are doing production ceramics in your studio we do request that you provide your own glaze for large amounts of work. THE USE OF UNAPPROVED GLAZE IS NOT ALLOWED! Please consult the list of approved glazes when purchasing glaze to use in our studio. If you want to see a glaze added to the list please get in touch with Eva to coordinate required specifications and testing to approve a new glaze for use in our studio.
Specifications:
All approved glazes are food safe.
Use & Safety Checklist:
Always mix glazes thoroughly before using, shake small bottles and jars. Use a mixer on a drill for large buckets. Always use safety glasses when there is a risk of splashing.
Use wax resist on any parts that will not be glazed. Any part of a piece that is within ¼” (more for certain glazes) of the kiln shelf it rests on should not be glazed. Always wipe glaze off of wax.
If using an especially drippy glaze, please use glaze drip catchers under your pieces so that the kiln shelf does not get ruined.
Only glaze bisqued pieces. While underglaze can be applied to either bisqueware or greenware, glaze should only be applied to bisque.
Large buckets of glaze are for dipping, smaller bottles and jars are for brushing on. Please dip in the dip style and brush only the brush style. Check the instructions if you are unsure.
When using a dip glaze, only dip pieces for a few seconds. The longer you keep the piece submerged, the more the glaze sticks to it. Thick coats of glaze can run and can ruin kiln furniture, other people's pieces, or the kiln itself. Over thick glaze can bubble and result in unwanted looks and textures.
When using brush on glaze, check the instructions for how many coats to apply. Too many and the glaze can run, to few and the glaze may not work properly.
For best results dust off pieces before applying glaze. If using water to remove dust make sure that the piece dries before applying as the water can resist the glaze.
While our glazes are all food safe after firing that does not mean they are safe when unfired. Always wipe up spills, wash hands or use gloves, and use safety glasses when there is a risk of splashing (stirring, spinning etc.).
